Obituary of Leola Askam
Leola B. Askam, 96, of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at Lutheran Living in Muscatine. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Interment will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Community Room. Visitation for Leola, will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Leola B. James was born on February 18, 1922 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Aaron and Julia Rachel (Darr) James. On January 26, 1941, Leola, was united in marriage to Walter J. Askam in West Liberty, IA. She worked at Thatcher Plastic for 20 years as secretary in the engineering department and then Monsanto from 1975 – 1983 as a secretary in technical services. Leola was a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church, served many years as the church organist and 30 years as Sunday School teacher. She served as youth counselor for youth group at church and held many various offices in women’s church groups. She loved her Bible and enjoyed traveling, collecting stones, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, flower gardens and volunteering at Lutheran Living.
Leola will be deeply missed by her sons, Gareth (Anita) Askam of Davenport, Richard Askam of Oak Park, IL, and Keith (Rose Mary) Askam of Monroe, MI; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Leola was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Phyllis (Harry) Baker.
