He married Joyce (Zahner) Collison on November 14, 1980, in Tipton, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Columbus, Ohio. Terry retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1983 after 22 years of service. His hobbies included leatherwork, bodywork on cars, bowling, and playing cards. He took great pride in his yard, keeping it looking well-groomed.
